Barzani, Ahmad

Barzani, Ahmad
(1896-1969)
Sheikh Ahmad Bar-zani was the elder brother of Mulla Mustafa Barzani and the last Barzani to bear the title "sheikh of Barzan." During the 1920s, Sheikh Ahmad earned a reputation among some for religious eccentricity involving claims of semi-divinity and unorthodox religious practices. He was apparently tolerant of Christians and Jews. Along with his younger brother Mulla Mustafa, he also rebelled against the government and was eventually imprisoned. In later years, Sheikh Ahmad attempted unsuccessfully to play a mediating role between the government and Mulla Mustafa.
